Oil spills are generally one of the worst environmental disasters to happen and require a huge clean up operation. Oil that collects on the ocean surface is usually burnt or skimmed off but it has been found that it can also form a plume that drifts through the water but underneath the surface making it even more difficult to clean up.
However, scientists have now invented a new foam called Oleo Sponge that easily absorbs spilled oil from both the water surface and the entire water column. It is also fully reusable and can be wrung out, the oil collected, and the material reused.
